It is difficult to put into words, how tactile and tangible is this debut release of Dead Yucca on our IMMINENT label (which is also the first album to be release in the new year of 2018). Giving this album a listen evokes a similar feeling as touching a skyscraper column towering above. The music tracks on this album create multiple constructs made of black marble with peculiar grey and white incrustations. That’s why Personal is generally a stark and gloomy release, which nevertheless also includes episodes of a decrease in the atmosphere of emotional overcast.
Judging by the previous description, it is easy to conclude that Personal is completely monolithic and inflexible, not allowing any fluctuations. You would be wrong with that. Just like any piece of architecture, this album by Dead Yucca has many layers and a unique structure. Multifaceted UK-Bass/Future Garage/2-Step influences collide with an ornament of ambient, techno and sometimes even world music and industrial bits and pieces.
The album starts with a track called Broken, which is surprisingly filled with teenage nostalgia, a sadness of unrequited love and a sense of transience of being young. The next track is called Fault, which increases the general pace of the release and feels like a city in fast forward footage. The following one titled Never Ends introduces a Mediterranean motif, creating a digital dust storm. Only One Motion entices with an atmosphere of the great unknown. The tracks called Personal and Stop Me re-introduce the fast-paced dynamics of the first tracks and gradually increase the tension. The ending tracks Wailing and We Are Alone, with a sense of running through distorted corridors evoked by the former and the classic atmospheric groove of the latter, prime the album to the conclusion, reminding of a sunrise at the highest levels of a skyscraper.
Because of those tracks, Personal is a skillfully structured, authentic and unique release that is perfect for the updated concept of our IMMINENT project.
